This is an enjoyable short story collection, especially if you enjoy a variety of speculative fiction. While many of the shorter stories are light-hearted or even zany (I'm looking at you "Tea Time With Elopus" and "Bow to Your Sensei!"), the longer stories are darker and more complex, focused on one or two characters and their struggles to break free from their situation and own self-doubts. If you've read Nathan's "Pandora's Box," there are several stories in the same military sci-fi vein, but some of my favorites, like "Sunrise" and "Heimdall" are more fantastical. The tent pole stories--"The Deacon," "Stoneheart," and "Defying Scylla"--each examine the protagonist's encounter with a different "beast," if I may put it that way. This was a fascinating collection of short stories; I'd consider it an excellent introduction to the speculative fiction genre for those who haven't really heard of it before.
If you enjoy reading but never seem to find the time to do so this is the book for you. There are many shorter stories that are great. The tent pole stories really captured me as I read them. If your looking for something new and different you will not be disappointed in the book.
